QUALITY OF THE DRINKING WATER IN KLAIPEDA CITY Quality of the drinking water in Klaipeda City is controlled by AB Klaipėdos Vanduo attested laboratory according to a schedule pre-agreed with the Food and Veterinary Service. The control is carried our continuously, including weekends and holidays. The sampling points are distributed all over the city. When choosing sampling points for drinking water, priority is given to schools, kindergartens, hospitals, enterprises of food industry and terminals of the water-supply network, for these are points of increased risk requiring special control. WASTEWATER TREATMENT Klaipeda biological wastewater treatment plant with removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was commissioned in 1998. The wastewater treatment plant was constructed in relation with implementation of an environmental project in Klaipeda. The project capacity of the wastewater treatment plant is 34.7 million m3 of wastewater per year. After reconstruction of the reactor of active sludge and introduction of nitrogen and phosphorus removal technologies in 2003 the capacity decreased to 29.2 million m3 of wastewater per year. |
